Last week Kelly in Year 13 received her IELTS result (the International English Language Testing System). This qualification is a university entrance requirement for students with English as an additional language. Kelly achieved a grade of 6.5 which is higher than the 6.0 required by most universities. Kelly aims to study business and marketing at either the University of Leeds or the University of Surrey. We would like to congratulate Kelly on her excellent IELTS result.

A dangerous game?
One of my colleagues has alerted me to a game called ‘Roblox’, which is widely played by children online. Apparently there have been numerous attempts to hack her children’s account for this game, which could potentially give a stranger the opportunity to impersonate the players. Luckily the attacks did not succeed as all the safeguards were in place.
I thought I would pass this on in case any pupils were playing this game. It seems the dangers of online gaming are growing – recent reports have pointed to a sort of addiction that can afflict young people, with damaging effects on their progress and general wellbeing. There is also the danger of online predators trying to gain access to children’s accounts.
I am sure all our parents will ensure they are aware of these dangers and that parental controls are in place if pupils are participating in this activity.

Sixth Form Escape!
Yesterday, our Sixth Form stayed after school to participate in a fiendish escape room activity devised by Mrs Mann. With puzzles, clues and QR codes hidden all over the school, the teams battled against each other solving every clue as fast as they could to find the location of the next puzzle trail. They were trying to reach the final mystery destination with all the information required to complete the last task. The winning team was the one that finished in the fastest time. It took just under two hours for the teams to complete the whole route and there was only a few seconds separating the teams in the end. It was a fantastic, fun and truly unique start to the term designed to fuel curiosity, problem solving, persistence and resilience, all of which are important skills for sixth form study.

GCSE Students on Cloud 9!
Year 11 collected their GCSE grades this morning. As you will be aware, the grading system has changed to 9 – 1 with grade 9 being higher than the previous A* grade. We are delighted to announce that for a quarter of our pupils this new grade featured in their results! In fact, a quarter of all grades awarded to Year 11 were the equivalent of A and above.
Mr Crump said ‘It is very satisfying to see our Year 11 pupils gaining the results they need for their next steps. I know they have worked very hard for these results with the unwavering support of their teachers and parents. I would like to congratulate each and every one of them.’
