We think that picking-up time at school should be a relaxing experience and a chance to chat – as plenty of our parents and staff already do, in the car park and around the school. It’s one of the advantages of being at HOHS rather than rushing into the city, after all! The weather looks nice today for our rollover day so if you’d like to linger a little after school please join us for tea, coffee and biscuits on the lawns from 3pm.
Mrs Bird’s stall at our fete on Saturday was pretty as a picture adorned with the entries to the seaside-themed miniature garden competition. The gardens were ALL wonderful – well done to everyone who created these masterpieces!
Charlie McN (Year 1) won first prize for a very inventive coastal scene complete with a surfer crashing in the waves, a small wood fire, fencing and real volcanic rock in a real mini-cacti setting.
Second prize went to Georgina E (Year 5), for her lolly-stick Wendy house on stilts and fish in a twinkly pool; third place was jointly awarded to Agata C-M ( Year 2), with her own scented coral and a sunbather on the beach and Emma F-B (Year 6).
Runners up were Samaara Y (Reception), Harry T (Year 1) and Charlotte and Chloe T (Years 1 and 4) .

With the Bank Holiday weekend ahead – and just a week to go until our summer fete and the judging of our mini garden compeition, now is the time to get inspired to create your seaside-themed mini masterpiece! Perhaps these pictures will inspire you… It costs just £2 to enter and you can bring your garden with you on the day of the fete.
The mezzanine floor of our sports hall has undergone a transformation over the past couple of months and is now a well-equipped fitness suite, complete with a variety of
machines – two treadmills, two bikes and a rowing machine – for great workouts!
The suite has been provided with generous support from our PA, for which we are very grateful. It will be used by our senior girls, who will be having their induction sessions with Mrs Woods or Miss Wright over the next weeks.
A very warm welcome back to school to all our day pupils, boarders, parents and staff! Mr Crump led the seniors in an assembly this morning before the girls started lessons in what will be an important exam term for many. The younger pupils, meanwhile, have had an exciting morning learning and catching up with their friends and have just enjoyed their tasty lunch before going off to play outside. There are spring flowers around the grounds and the sun seems to be trying to shine to prove the point that this is, after all, the summer term!
Over the last few days of the Easter holidays, why not start planning and building your entry for Mrs Bird’s fabulous miniature garden competition? It’s a great way to exercise your imagination and creative flair! Your garden can be any shape as long as its overall size is no larger than 30 x 30cm and judging will take place at our seaside-themed Summer Fete on Saturday 12th May. All the entries will be displayed there and prizes will be awarded. Go on, you know you want to!
It’s wonderful to see former HOHS student Joy Chianu promoting science subjects to young women in this video from the prestigious McGill University in Canada. Joy, who won a scholarship to study chemical engineering there, achieved outstanding results in her biology, chemistry, physics and maths A Levels at HOHS, as well as in her EPQ. We are very proud of Joy and how she is encouraging other young women to study STEM subjects.

Thank you to the families who came to see Year 5’s assembly on Tuesday – and what a treat we enjoyed! The girls had the whole audience laughing at their backdrop cartoons (and pictures of teachers caught with some favourite books!) Matilda made a very convincing presenter for the ‘Family Fortunes’ episode, with Amy, Georgina, Eve and Caitlin playing the roles of the very knowledgeable competitors. All the girls performed with wonderful confidence as they reminded us of all the good things about reading, ending with a fun reworking of the Black-Eyed Peas’ ‘I Gotta Feeling’ (‘This book’s gonna be a good, good book!’) All in all this was a most enjoyable and informative assembly – well done, Year 5 and Mrs Fisher! Parents, please note that tomorrow’s class assembly presentation by Year 6 has regrettably had to be postponed because of the ‘snow days’ last week. Mr Peace will announce the rescheduled date as soon as possible…the children will be working hard to make sure it will be well worth waiting for!
