Sea Life Centre Visit

This week, children in the Nursery and Reception classes visited the Sea Life Centre in Great Yarmouth. The children were given a guided tour so they could learn all about the fish and sea creatures in the centre. They were even allowed to touch a starfish! The trip was highly informative and thoroughly enjoyed by all the children. More pictures of this trip will be published on our Facebook page and in the website news section tomorrow.

Canaries adventure for Samaara!

Great to hear from Samaara (Year 1) and her family, who have been visiting Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.  As you can see, Samaara did a lot while there; seeing the volcanoes, up close with dolphins, camel ride and parasailing!

Farewell to Michael Reeves

After 28 years looking after our school (and cooking for us for many of them, too!),  Michael Reeves is leaving us in June to pursue a life of leisure in his native, beloved Ireland. Many parents, past pupils and friends of the school will know Mr Reeves as a lynchpin of school life at HOHS, an extraordinarily resourceful, practical and helpful ‘Mr Fixit’. Over his tenure here he has also ably managed all of our commercial lettings, for organisations who hire our wonderful swimming pool, sports hall and other facilities when not in school use.

If you would like to show appreciation for Mr Reeves’ hard work and dedication, please send or bring donations to school Reception before 25th May (end of half term). Mr Reeves’ last day in school will be Friday 8th June.

No after-school fun swim today

Parents, unfortunately there will be no swimming for Years 3-6 after school today as Mrs McEvoy is unwell.  Children are, of course, very welcome to stay and join in the other fun activities organised by our after-school co-ordinator, or you may collect them earlier if you prefer.

Our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Worms in the Nursery (the good kind!)

Our topic in the Nursery this term is Mini Beasts. Last week the children got hands-on with earthworms and built their own wormery. It was a lot of fun and they learned plenty of fascinating worm facts, too!

Little monkeys in the Nursery!

As part of our jungle topic, the Nursery children have been looking at monkeys this week. We have moved like monkeys, danced like monkeys and every child has painted a monkey to hang around the classroom!

Everyone has made their own monkey to hang around the classroom

Some monkeys like to hang upside down!

Dancing like monkeys!

Busy Nursery days!

Everyone has been quickly getting back into the swing of school in our Nursery classes this week, and on Thursday the roving camera spotted children doing all kinds of
interesting things…identifying animals, role-playing, sponge painting, cutting-out-and-sticking and playing imaginative games together.

Holiday art work

Some of our younger pupils have sent in some lovely art and craft work they created over the holidays – thank you to Daphne, Vera, Agata and Maisy! You can see more details on the pictures.
Well done all the children; we hope you enjoyed doing these as much as we have liked seeing them!

Daphne (Nursery Yellow) enjoyed being creative every day over the holidays, making many lovely things. Inspired by Spring, she made these ‘Springtime Flower Pictures’ using pens, finger paints, paints and glitter (with a little help for the tricky bits!).

Here we have two felt rabbits made by Maisy (Year  6), who received some sewing kits for Christmas.  Check out the dog she made, too, in the next picture!

Vera (Nursery Yellow) and big sister Agata (Year 2) have some of their holiday artwork on display at home.  The first picture on the on the left is Vera’s first work produced completely on her own and includes 3D elements; the black penguin is also hers, and the other two pictures were done by Agata.

An afternoon of Christmas Tales

Year 9 pupils were to be found recently in the Year 1 classroom, reading the children some picture-book stories they had created especially for them.

The storytelling followed two weeks of planning, writing and drawing in the girls’ English lessons, inspired by stories Mrs Crump had read them. The girls gave careful consideration to the vocabulary to use and the number of characters as well as the actual storyline and pictures, in order to create stories that would be engaging for a younger audience. There were some very impressive illustrations and the stories were set in places as varied as New York’s Central Park and a zoo!

Year 1 listened carefully and enjoyed the stories very much. Afterwards, Mrs Bird asked the children which was their favourite – and they said they liked them all! We all had a lovely afternoon!
