Inventive Ideas in Year 2

For their topic this half term, Year 2 have been learning all about ‘Incredible Inventions’. They have learnt about famous inventors such as Thomas Edison, The Wright Brothers and Alexander Graham Bell. They have also learnt how inventions have changed over time such as the development of music devices from the gramophone to the modern day iPod.

On Wednesday 6th February, Year 2 had an ‘inventions day’. The day began with a visit from a local inventor. April Nash works for Orchard Toys and she came to deliver a board games workshop. The children played some of the games she had invented before discussing what they liked about the games and what makes a good game. April then taught the children how to invent their own board games. The children had to think about a theme and include imaginative ideas such as going backwards or forwards spaces. The children produced some excellent game designs and will be writing instructions on how to play the game in their English lessons.

Pancake-tossing in Year 2!

Yesterday was Shrove Tuesday, or pancake day, so no prizes for guessing what was on the lunch menu! And in Year 2, there was a bit of fun to end the day…
The children learned all about the old tradition of pancake races (originating in Olney, Buckinghamshire) where you have to flip the pancake in a pan and decided to have a go themselves! They discovered it is harder than it looks, but some people were VERY good at it!

Costumes at the ready..

It’s that time of year for digging through the dressing-up box and taking an extra hour in the morning to get our children ready for school! Yes, World Book Day is tomorrow  (Thursday 2nd March) and we are looking forward to seeing our Prep pupils dressed as characters from their favourite books.  We also have a Where’s Wally? hunt and a visit on Friday from Ketts Books in Wymondham. The pictures below will bring back memories – look out for new ones on the blog tomorrow evening and over the weekend!

At HOHS you’re never too young for hockey!

We had a great half term of hockey for all ages as you may have read in Miss Mickleburgh’s hockey report. Here are Year 2 in full kit having a lesson towards the end of term in the sports hall, and getting ready to go to an away fixture. They have really enjoyed their hockey lessons, learning dribbling, passing, tackling and shooting skills as well as playing games and learning the rules. Well done, everyone!

Party fun and games for Prep and Lower Prep…

This afternoon our Prep and Lower Prep pupils changed into party clothes and enjoyed festive food, fun and games at their Christmas parties. For the little ones, the highlight was the visit from Father Christmas, who came with goodies and a cheery chat for everyone.  Meanwhile, the older children were busy throwing some great shapes on the dance floor for musical statues! Our thanks go to Mr Reeves and his team for preparing the party teas and making sure the dining hall looked suitably festive.

Reception’s colourful autumn assembly

Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and friends who came to see our Reception children present their special Autumn-themed assembly  this morning – we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! The children have been working on ‘Autumn Changes’ as their topic this half term and this was a chance to showcase some of what they have learned.  They have all enjoyed exploring our woods and collecting leaves of all different colours as well as other Autumn treasures such as conkers and acorns. These helped to inspire the children to create the beautiful Autumn-themed artwork they showed us in assembly, and to write the Autumn Changes poem they recited for us:

It’s getting very cold now,
So we must wrap up warm.
Walking in the woods is fun.
We scrunch through all the leaves
That have fallen off the trees.
Red and yellow,
Orange and brown.

Very well done, Reception! Look out for more of the children’s Autumn-themed work on the blog in the next couple of weeks.
